Announcing z/XPF™!
AFTON, Va. , August 10, 2008/ -- Cole Software is pleased to announce the beta test availability of z/XPF™. z/XPF (Patent Pending) is a “profiler”, a tool that programmers, analysts and capacity planners can use to understand more about the performance of their applications programs and systems.
z/XPF gathers more information at a much lower level, and presents reports that are configurable from the task level right down to a “piece” of a csect. Therefore, z/XPF gathers more information than other profilers, and reports its findings with much more granularity.
What makes z/XPF special?
Because z/XPF uses TODAY’s technology to measure events within the target address space, it doesn’t suffer from traditional constraints that other profilers are subject to.
- z/XPF gathers all its information without maintaining ANY presence in the target address space. It therefore DOES NOT AFFECT what it measures! This, by itself, is the most significant improvement z/XPF offers over existing profilers.
- No hooks of any kind are used. z/XPF does not intercept any code path anywhere.
- z/XPF reports on events that occur at the processor level, and then adds target profile address space “environmental” data to “event” data. Other such products report on the “state” of the address space by looking inside the target profile address space. Because z/XPF starts at a more granular level at data capture time, the reports contain information the other profilers cannot possibly have due to their architecture.
- z/XPF reports on Program Calls.
- z/XPF reports on SVCs by count and elapsed execution time, not just the percent of time the PSW was identified inside an SVC routine.
- z/XPF can identify DB2 activity for both dynamic SQL and static SQL by task, DBRM (Database Request Module), section within DBRM, or DB2 csect.
- z/XPF can automatically add IBM® z/OS® SLIP/PER Instruction Fetch or Branch Trace records to the capture dataset. The records used in the Detail reporting process provide a powerful, yet easy-to-use diagnostic tool. Nothing like this exists within other such products.
- Two categories of information are reported that reflect the impact other work in the MVS system is having on the target, and the reverse: what impact the target is having on other work in the system.
- Page Faults are identified by load module and csect. z/XPF can identify what location within a csect caused the Page Fault to occur.
- z/XPF “knows” the number of times and the elapsed time spent when a task is suspended waiting for a lock.
- Deeper reporting logic. Other products report at the summary reporting level. Z/XPF has that, but can also go much deeper than “summary reports”.
What does z/XPF cost?
Other profilers also suffer from another traditional problem: that of exorbitant cost!
Many potential customers of profiling products just cannot afford six-figure amounts in order to own them. Such customers have had to justify NOT having this sort of tool, figuring that lost revenues from poorly performing code are exceeded by the cost of investing in a profiler! We can fix that problem, as well!
- Cole Software offers one price for any single processor – at any capacity!
- Cole Software offers one price for any single connected sysplex – at any capacity!
- Cole Software offers one price for any single site – at any capacity!
Who needs a profiler?
For nearly thirty years, Cole Software has focused its efforts on providing best-of-breed debugging technology to the software vendor industry with its acclaimed z/XDC debugging tool. Over the years, our customers have asked us for an “analysis” product, and in cooperation with Duke Software, we now can fill that niche.
Now systems-level programmers, software developers, capacity planners and Operations management all have access to a profiler that delivers more functionality at a lower price-point than any other such product. It’s called z/XPF!
We’re looking for beta customers.
z/XPF is available to a few select companies who will agree to help us perfect z/XPF. If you or your people are interested in participating in this program, please contact Bob Shimizu at Cole Software at (800) XDC-5150 or via e-mail at bshimizu@colesoft.com.
